Killer Klowns from Outer Space film review

When I started exploring the horror film genre, a family friend introduced to me to Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988). By the title alone, the film automatically gives away the cheesiness that lies within the film. Despite the cheesiness Killer Klowns from Outer Space is still one of my absolute favorite films and I always want to show the feature to my friends. Upon finding this on DVD for cheap the day after Christmas one year at Best Buy, I was beyond overjoyed! This was a film until then I had only known to be on VHS. I even remember running up to my father and bouncing up and down about my friend from pure excitement I had coursing through my veins at the time.

This movie was my childhood though! That might be weird for some people to accept, but its the truth. A weird joy comes out of watching this horror/Sci-Fi flick. I would compare it to watching Howard The Duck (1986). No one can really explain why anyone would want to watch it repeatedly, but the desire remains there all the same. Audiences are drawn to both enough that DVDs were released of both films. This is great for both myself and other fans of these cult classics.

The synopsis of Killer Klowns from Outer Space is a rather simple one. Killer aliens have come from outer-space to take over a small town. They slowly begin capturing and killing people, spinning them into cotton candy, or a balloon in some cases, so they can have them as their dinner later. When two of the younger people in town try to warn everyone no one believes them. Why would someone believe that a clown would kill anyone? Besides, they all have painted on smiles and all their so-called weapons are even clown-like!

Although practically no one believes the two youths, they proceed to team up with the only other two people in town who chooses to believe them and arm themselves with an ice cream truck and their own wits. Can these four people manage to save their town from being taken over by the alien invaders? One can only find out with an adventure into the fun house.

The acting is over the top, which makes the feature that much more delightful. After all, when someone is captured and spun into cotton candy as a form of death how serious can someone make a portrayal? I know I would have been laughing on set every time someone were to bring this up. This is probably why there is a good reason I would rather be behind the scenes instead of in front of a camera one day. To be able to bring any seriousness to this script is quite fantastic within itself. So despite the lack of seriousness, the fact that all the actors and actresses try must garner them an “A” for effort.

Overall, Killer Klowns from Outer Space will always provide me with some of my favorite cinematic killers. There is something warped and twisted about making such a statement, but that is the glory of this film in general! If one takes all their films far too serious then this is not the film for you. If a person wants to be able to sit back and laugh at the insanity that appears on screen every now and then this is the perfect film to do so at the end of the day. After all, slight spoiler alert, when a clown can make a T-Rex shadow puppet on the side of a wall to entertain folks before using the same shadow puppet to devour them that is entertainment!

This film certainly will not bore you. Killer Klowns from Outer Space will certainly keep one entertained to the point they will probably go out and find it in a five dollar bin somewhere. Embrace this guilty pleasure and just have fun for the evening. My only advice is finding something other than popcorn or cotton candy to eat during your trip this circus.
